Accommodating the kinesthetic learner

A number of learning style models can be found in the research on this subject.These fall into general categories such as information processing, personality patterns, and social interaction (Conner, 2004).But are classroom teachers always prepared to try matching their teaching styles with learning styles of their students?Do they always remember to cater to different learning styles?These theories propose that all people can be classified according to their 'style' of learning, although the various theories present differing views on how the styles should be defined and categorised.Kolb's model outlines two related approaches toward grasping experience: Concrete Experience and Abstract Conceptualization, as well as two related approaches toward transforming experience: Reflective Observation and Active Experimentation.

These four learning styles are assumed to be acquired preferences that are adaptable, either at will or through changed circumstances, rather than being fixed personality characteristics.Learning styles have been formulated over the years to help us recognize the way we approach learning and methods we use to gain knowledge.It is an individual's distinctive approach to learning based on strengths, weaknesses, and preference with a mixture of various styles.This article reminds the teachers of the need to be aware of individual learning styles and learner diversity.While the Multiple Intelligences Theory of Howard Gardner is the most popular and readily used by teachers (Currie, 2003), there are other ideas about learning styles, which also can be useful for EFL/ESL teachers.
